Karate is open to all ages, young and old. There are many benefits such as:
- Can improve physical well-being.
- Can improve balance, coordination and flexibility.
- Can build self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Increased levels of energy, focus and concentration.
- Learn and master self-defence techniques.
Whilst karate lessons can vary, basic fundamentals are taught every lesson. These include:
Stretching - Warming and stretching your muscles before and after training is very important. It increases athletic performance for training and decreases the risk of injury.
Kihon (Basics) - Kihon focuses on correct techniques of stances, blocks, kicks & strikes. This is heavily practised in Dojos in order to master more advanced techniques within Kata & Kumite.
Kata (Pattern) - Kata is a set pattern of movements, each with their own name. Kata helps build muscle memory and also trains timing, body coordination and speed.
Kumite (Sparring) - Kumite introduces a set of pre-arranged training drills consisting of punches, kicks & blocks with a partner. Different types of kumite include one step, five step, semi-free and free sparring, depending on belt level. Higher grades must have mitts, mouthguards and chest protectors for females.
Bow on and Bow off - Every lesson begins and ends with a traditional bow on and bow off.
